Emergency Response Training (ERT / BHV) Refresher
The Emergency Response Training (ERT/BHV) Refresher is designed for qualified Emergency Response Officers who need to maintain their competence and keep their certification up to date. Within organisations, Emergency Response Officers are responsible for assessing incidents, providing assistance and ensuring safety. Because these situations occur infrequently in practice, regular refresher training is essential to ensure that skills remain usable when it matters.
Maintaining competence within the framework of workplace safety
Within the framework of the ‘Arbowet’, employers are required to ensure that employees are capable of responding adequately to emergencies. This goes beyond appointing Emergency Response Officers; it requires that their skills remain current and applicable.
Refresher training supports this by focusing on the continued ability to act, not only on knowledge retention.
Why refresher training matters in practice
Emergency Response tasks are not part of daily routines. As a result, the ability to act can decline over time if not actively maintained.
In practice, this means:
procedures are known, but not immediately applied
actions take longer to initiate
communication becomes less structured
confidence in handling incidents decreases
Refresher training is aimed at maintaining the ability to act quickly and appropriately.
What will you learn during the Emergency Response Training (ERT/BHV) Refresher?
During the refresher training, participants repeat and practice the core Emergency Response tasks. The focus is on reinforcing practical skills and ensuring that procedures can still be applied correctly in realistic situations.
Firefighting and evacuation
raising the alarm and evacuating people
extinguishing a starting a fire
using appropriate firefighting equipment
preparing an evacuation
systematically evacuating a building
Life-saving First Aid (CPR & AED)
transporting a casualty to safety
assessing the casualty's condition
dealing with injuries
performing CPR and using an AED
communicating with and handling over to emergency services
Scenario-based training: applying procedures in context
The refresher training is built around practical scenarios. Participants are required to apply procedures in situations that reflect the workplace.
In these scenarios, participants:
assess situations
determine appropriate actions
apply procedures step by step
Because organisations differ, scenarios are aligned with the work environment.
This ensures that training remains relevant to the actual workplace.
From knowledge retention to practical readiness
Refresher training is not about re-learning theory, but about maintaining readiness.
Participants actively engage in exercises, apply procedures and receive guidance, which supports continued competence.
Programme: focused and practical
The Emergency Response Training (ERT/BHV) Refresher has a duration of one day and is highly practical.
Participants:
repeat essential Emergency Response skills
work with realistic scenarios
apply procedures in exercises
receive guidance from instructors
The training focuses on maintaining competence rather than introducing new content.
Participants who successfully complete the refresher training receive a renewal of their Emergency Response certificate.
Minimum requirements
The refresher training is exclusively intended for participants who have successfully completed the Emergency Response Training (ERT/BHV) Basic.
If you do not yet have this certificate, you need to follow the Emergency Response Training Basic.
